What is the vision of Republicanism?

David Frum asks an important question.

"Whatever the Obama program's faults, however, it is a positive program. A Republican program that emphasizes "repeal" and "undo" is not a positive program. It's not a future-oriented program either: it's a program to refight the battles of the past four years, hoping this time to win the fights that were lost last time.

The gap will especially glare in the area of healthcare. If President Obama is re-elected, near-universal coverage will become a fact—a cludgy and expensive fact, but a fact. If President Obama is defeated, the promise of universal coverage will be withdrawn, to be replaced by ... what? The country is still waiting for that answer.

An opposition party challenging a president who can claim a record of economic recovery cannot afford to leave the country waiting. Anti-Obamaism won't suffice in 2012. So what is the answer to the person who worries: "A vote against Obama is a vote to give back my health care coverage. What will your team offer instead?""

You actually do not want Obamacare repealed? Every single Republican and a number of Democrats voted against it. Not a single politician has campaigned on its merits, they pass the thing then silence. And what about all the states that have challenged its constitutionality? No I stay with the old system just as long as it takes to fix it and that is all we need to do.

reckoner said 3 months ago ...

I think it's good that people with pre-existing conditions can't be denied insurance, I think it's good that kids can stay on their parents insurance longer, I think it's great that we will have near universal coverage, etc, etc.

"Not a single politician has campaigned on its merits"

Not single politician has campaigned on an alternative.

But you dodged the main question, what is the republican vision for the future?

outlander said 3 months ago ...

You just ended the debate with this pre-existing conditions nonsense again. Wiki the definition of insurance then do a post on why Obamacare is so great then I will back. And we need to spend a trillion dollars to expand medicaid and let kids mooch off their parents longer than they should? You are not helping your side any here.

Outlander. I noticed that both you and Alienated have names which indicate a feeling of separation. Do you feel that you hold minority opinions? Do you feel isolated? Are you a fan of the Peter Hyams movie?

Just curious...

"Wiki the definition of insurance"

I think this raises a good point, who says our healthcare system should be based on insurance? I wanted a single payer system, but the compromise was private insurance combined with a mandate and fixes like the one for pre-existing conditions.

Again, I haven't heard of a republican alternative.

reckoner said 3 months ago ...

@outlander

romneycare does the same thing on pre-existing conditions. I thought you thought that was good?

outlander said 3 months ago ...

Can you take your car that needs a transmission to an insurance company and say "I wanna buy some insurance and you guys are going to have to pay for the transmission" ? No.

Romneycare is not perfect. Obamacare forces insurance companies to pay for the above transmission, Romneycare put together groups of insurers in one "connector" area and worked with them to design policies that deal with pre-existing conditions.

There cannot and should not be a comparison between OC and RC because of the size of both of the bills and what they both do to solve the same problem. Just because they attempt to solve the same problem doesn't mean they are the same.

If Obama got with the insurance industry and said we are going to create a nationwide connector place where everyone can go and easily find coverage, we are going to instead of throwing money at hospitals to subsidize the poor we are going to beef up medicaid programs so it is easier for the poor to get coverage, and for those who do not want coverage they can either pay into a health savings account or pay more taxes. This is not what Obamacare does, it is a mix of government intervention into areas government doesn't belong. Look at the mess Obama has gotten into with this birth control stuff.

reckoner said 3 months ago ...

"Romneycare is not perfect. Obamacare forces insurance companies to pay for the above transmission"

And so does romneycare! I can't tell if you know this and refuse to say it outloud, or if your brain fails to register facts like this.

They are the same. Both mandate coverage, both make you pay around $1000 if you don't get coverage, and both prevent insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions.

Say it with me, romneycare prevents insurance companies from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions.

outlander said 3 months ago ...

Where I have a problem is Federal versus State. Romneycare says insurance companies can deny coverage of up to 6 months for pre-existing conditions if the person has not had insurance for up to 63 days prior. He also had his connector companies design specific policies for pre-existing conditions.

Obamacare while similar is different in that it designs high risk pools until 2014 at which time the individual mandate will dilute the pool supposedly so pre-existing conditions won't matter. Where I see a problem is OC mandates these high risk pools cover pre-existing conditions but also says these pools cannot raise their rates. This makes no sense.

The problem here is the law says these companies cannot raise their premiums which is kind of weird and goes back to getting insurance to fix an all ready dented car.

reckoner said 3 months ago ...

"Romneycare says insurance companies can deny coverage of up to 6 months for pre-existing conditions if the person has not had insurance for up to 63 days prior."

This is basically the same as Obama's plan. they are the same!

"but also says these pools cannot raise their rates. "

Can you link to a source on this? I've never heard that before.
