Was saved by Scientists from the Siberian Permafrost, I find this incredible and quite hopeful : )
What do you think it means? My first thought is medicinal cures. Sure in the article they talk more of discovering Evolutionary things. If this little plant hadn't been seen in 30,000 years there of course must be hundreds more, plants we have never seen, never studied, never known anything about. Think of the cures in these plants just sitting there waiting for them to be revived!
Very Cool.
I saw this and my first thought was "wow, that's cool" and my second thought was "what if we just unleashed some prehistoric disease that's gonna wipe out the planet"? Too many viewings of "The Andromeda Strain", I guess. When I read that this plant is closely related (if not identical) to modern plants in the same area, I was less concerned.
It does seem quite possible to mess with ecosystems with work like this, but that never stopped us before :) The most successful wild birds and plants in the area were I live are mostly non-natives species. These include the ubiquitous wild mustard plants, starlings, weaver finches ("sparrows"), rock doves ("pigeons") and so on.
Perhaps in a few decades, Los Angeles will be overrun with Mammoths!
