Figs and wasps...

Have you ever had a fresh fig before? If you haven't, you should definitely try them. Next time you're at the grocery store, look for them in the produce section.

I love figs, don't you? I don't know if any of you have had fresh figs, but they are totally and completely different from dried figs, which I also love. Get some green apples, grapes and figs, with a nice wheel of brie cheese? Yum. You can also go with fresh mozzarella, feta, or just plain farmers cheese. Basically, any mild white cheese goes well with the fruits. Pair it with a bottle of white wine or a bottle of asti, and you've got yourself a serious snack plate. Add some prosciutto, or ham, or some dried sausage to the plate, hell, any kind of cured meat and you've got yourself a terrific lunch (or dinner). YUM!!!

Figs have been around in the middle east and the mediterranean for centuries now, and there are written accounts about figs in all sorts of historical documents.

It's even in the Bible, both old and new testaments. In the Old testament, it represented the richness and bounty of Israel, and in the New testament, the withering fig tree represented the decaying teachings of the Saduccees and the Pharisees. Yep, that's the fig tree that Jesus kills.

But did you know that figs are also a great example of symbiotic evolution? Yep. Figs and fig wasps have evolved to help each other out: Fig wasps lay their eggs inside the fruit where the wasp larvae can safely develop, and in return, the wasps pollinate the figs. But what happens when a wasp lays its eggs but fails to pollinate the fig?

The trees get even by dropping those figs to the ground, killing the baby wasps inside. More than 700 species each of fig trees and wasps have co-evolved in the tropics worldwide, with each fig tree species having its own species of pollinating wasp.

Neat, huh?

More can be read about this here.

I know this might seem like there's some grand intelligence to it all, but trust me on this. There's not. :P

Never ate a fig before but you mentioned a couple of my favorite things! FETA CHEESE AND ASTI, ahhhh yea.

grapekoolaid said 3 months ago ...

Seriously, go to your nearest chain grocery store and look for them, preferably fresh. Once you bite into one, you'll be straight up angry. Angry as in, "where has this fruit been all my life and why am I trying them only now?" kind of angry.

I'm not joking.

starchini said 3 months ago ...

Alright I will, have you ever had a starfruit? Thats about the most exotic fruit ive ever eaten : )

grapekoolaid said 3 months ago ...

Yes!!! I'm a big fan of fruits (anything with sugars in general), so I've scoured my grocery stores for anything sweet. Sometimes I strike out and get sour fruits, but even those are okay, too.

If there's a Chinese grocery store near you, go there and look for the kiwis they have there. The insides are orange in color and are far sweeter than the green ones. You'll never even look at the green ones again. :)

Didn't you know there is a war on cheese? You'd better not let that get out, the cheese police will be after you.

War on cheese?

yummm... we have breadfruit right now, sour sop my favourite fruit and loads of dragon fruit - your tried a dragon fruit grape?

fresh figs .......... mmmmmmmm. When I was little we had a fig tree in the back yard. I still love the smell of a ripe fig. Kinda peppery. That plate you described made me resent my crappy lunch! Try adding about an inch of honey still in the comb to the side of the plate. You dip the fruit in it before adding the brie.

Hey Lu! what was the name of that ice cream we had when I was there? It was made from a really interesting fruit.

lucyt said 3 months ago ...

Yeh that was soursop icecreaam, then there was the red one... shit shit forgot, we had like 5 scoops of different types didn't we? I know they had jackfruit, black sapote, shit can't remember them all.

Ohh they were yummy.

bluegum said 3 months ago ...

Lucy was it mackadama, we can get it down at Childers ,and that Dragon fruit is great there is two one is white with the black seeds and the other is red with little black seeds but if you have diadeties ''holy hell the sugar reading skyrockets ,but what the hell you gotta stray sometimes heh. Blue.

Grape i love figs i'll eat em any old way fresh'preserved ,the works but hell there dear can be up to $30 a kilo ''thats about 2.2 pounds for you i think and there is defenitly no grazing on them, when your are shopping, they take a dim view of that. Blue.

lucy: We've talked about breadfruit before. It's a fruit I've yet to try. Dragon fruit? I don't think I've ever had a fresh dragon fruit before. I've had dragon fruit flavored stuff (like candy & ice cream and what not) but not a fresh one. That's going to have to go on the list. :)

uni: A fig tree in your backyard? I'm jealous... That also means you had fig wasps around your place, too. And honey?!! You've just changed the whole equation there. This plate is thousands of years old, you know that, right? It's a dish that could have been enjoyed by the most decadent Pharaoh to the humblest shepherd.

blue: They can be a bit pricey, that's true. Grazing on figs at the grocery store. Gave me a good chuckle imagining the looks of disapproval. As long as the staff doesn't see it, I approve. :)

Grape Figs are in season right now here and they cost $4 for 300grms, you can imagine that would be only 3 figs. So a little expensive.

I love the red dragon fruit, but then there is the custard apple... and a favourite for my facials ! PAW PAW....

I love fruit... not plain fruit, mind you a good apple is fun t eat but then being spoiled for freshness here why eat an apple when you can go to the front of our property and pull a half a dozen mangosteins, now there is the queen of fruit! you tried a mangostein grape?

uniquely-learning said 3 months ago ...

Lu - it was the sapote that I really got into. It was by far the most interesting fruit I'd ever tasted in ice cream form.

grape - yes, I do realize it is the most rustic, humble and soul nourishing plate a person could have. I'm a big fan of eating foods in their most natural and traditional state.

grapekoolaid said 3 months ago ...

lucy: Mangostein? You crazy Aussies and your crazy Aussie fruits... That's another one I have to add to the list. Care to give me a description? And yes, $4 for three figs is a bit pricey. But I've paid $5 for a single pear, so if the fruit is right, money's no object. Ever have one of them Asian pears? The ones that cost $5 a piece are the size of a softball. So watery and sweet... Yumm... I had persimmons the other day. They were good, too. My favorite apples are Fuji apples. They're pretty damn big, too.

uni: My favorite lunch is some smoked or cured meat of any kind, paired with some knobby, crusty bread, some farmer's cheese and slices of white raw onions. No one's gonna wanna kiss me after that, but if I wash it down with the aforementioned fruit plate and some wine, I'm in heaven!
