Muslim Song Allowed In School Choir

All the talk about keeping religion out of schools must mean the ACLU is racing to Colorado, right? A Colorado student who wrongly claims Allah is a different God says he dropped out of the choir because of the A.R. Rahman song Zikr. In reading this article I first sided with the teacher when she said:

Choral music is often devoted to religious themes. ... This is not a case where the school is endorsing or promoting any particular religion or other non-educational agenda. The song was chosen because its rhythms and other qualities would provide an opportunity to exhibit the musical talent and skills of the group in competition, not because of its religious message or lyrics.

No bid deal. As I have said before obscure religious expression is not a bad thing and as long as there is a secular purpose, no promotion of a religion, and no entanglements between government and religion then who cares?

Then I go and find the words to A.R. Rahman's song:

I got these lyrics here and edited the Islamic dialogue.

The song in English is as follows:

there is no implementation superior to zikr, is the decree of the Prophet of Allaah! P.B.U.H.

those who do zikr of Allaah from the the heart are indeed freed!

the ego of the soul gets chopped off by doing zikr, zikr undoubtedly is Allaah's sword.

zikr is peace. zikr is Victory. zikr is Healing. zikr is the Cure

Allaah is the only One who is eternal and immortal and rest are perishable and will be destroyed by Allaah

Apart from the greatness of Allaah, apologize from the hearts for anything else

Light of Mohammad, may peace be upon him, there is no other god except Allaah

in every flower, in every fragrance, in everything is the light of Allah

in every heart every moment, may the zikr of Allaah's stay

zikr is better than hatred

zikr is better than carelessness

zikr is better than disobedience

zikr is better than saying bad things

O, the self-subsisting One, who holds the entire universe

O, the first One, who was there before anything else

O, the last One, who will be there after everything else is gone

O, the Forgiving, O, the Generous, O, the Great, O the Merciful

O, the beneficent, O, the praiseworthy,

O, the Lord of Majesty of bounty.

Not exactly Silent Night is it? You cannot make this shit up.

Why do you care? I thought it was the same God? Isn't he the God of Abraham in all instances?

outlander said 3 months ago ...

Because this is a clear violation of the Constitution. My argument has always been obscure relgious expression should be accepted and this is far from obscure.

grapekoolaid said 3 months ago ...

But I thought you were all about injecting god in everywhere regardless of whether they belong there or not? I thought you said this was a "Christian" nation. If it's the same God, why do you care?

outlander said 3 months ago ...

Stop right there! Compare right now all the things I have bitched about to this song. I have given a logical argument as to why obsure mention of God is acceptable. This is not an obscure mention and has suspicious smell of demagoguery. My main question is will you guys fight to support this kid, will the ACLU get involved?

If you took all the mention of anything to do with Islam and replaced it with Christian words it would still be a violation.

reckoner said 3 months ago ...

Obviously this song shouldn't be in school.

grapekoolaid said 3 months ago ...

I don't understand why this is not okay but a sculpture of the Ten Commandment is. I don't see why the Ten Commandment is obscure and this song lyrics aren't. Allah is just an Arabic word for "God". It doesn't specify which God. (Your argument, correct?)

"If you took all the mention of anything to do with Islam and replaced it with Christian words it would still be a violation."

I agree with you. But does that mean that all school choirs should stop performing Handel's Messiah, or any masses by Mozart or Beethoven also? Get rid of all Christmas and Hannukah songs and all that? That would be a pretty boring concert. I feel bad for the parents.

I also agree with the teacher's statement. They sing Christmas and Hannukah songs during the winter concerts, so why not this one?

It was the kid's choice to walk away from the choir. He could have chosen to protest/sue the school to stop the choir but instead, he chose to walk away. So meh.

I think we could just skip the argument call Outlander a hypocrit and remember to cite this as proof that if it's not Christianity that it's violation. I agree this shouldn't be in school, but I'd also argue that a public school shouldn't have a choir and if they do they ought be singing something secular though.

I happen to think that art and music is important aspects of a person's development. I have to believe that since I'm a liberal arts major. :P Music (and the ability to read and write music) is as much of a language as Math is. In fact, there is a numbers component to music that is very closely related to math.

There's plenty of music that's out there that has no religious significance at all.

grape-I have said numerous times the Ten commandments are walking a fine line and have a historical and legal significance. And even the TCs' mention of God doesn't site any religion whereas Allah is Islam. That is not what concerns me. Was putting this song in the line up for songs to be song in public school picking a fight? It was. I am sure there are songs of an Islamic nature that could have been picked but this one?

Christmans and Hannukah songs serve a secular purpose and do any reach the level this one does?

Sean-If this gets brushed under the carpet that I will have been proven right because I have said all of you guys' nonsense in suing schools has created a boy of cried wolf scenerio because real constitutional issue will get skipped over.

grapekoolaid said 3 months ago ...

"And even the TCs' mention of God doesn't site any religion whereas Allah is Islam."

Seriously. The stupid. It burns.

Allah is just an Arabic word for God. If you were to translate the word from Arabic to English, it would be translated not as "Allah" like that's the god's name, but "god", as in a deity.

Take this arabic word for example. "Insh'allah". It means "If god wills it." or, "god willing".

What do you think the word for "God" was in the Ten Commandments? In its original language, that is?

reckoner said 3 months ago ...

"And even the TCs' mention of God doesn't site any religion whereas Allah is Islam."

Wow, this is so completely wrong it's hard to believe. IT says that you are not allowed to have any other gods before you. It's very clear which god it's talking about. It says you can't have any idols, and it's crystal clear what it means.

outlander said 3 months ago ...

What is wrong you people?

God is a general term.

Allah is a specific name given to God

Jehovah is a specific name given to God

Jesus is a name given to God's son

Mohammed is a name given to a profit of Allah.

Yahweh is a name given to God.

Use of the name denotes use of that religion. Where in the TC's is Yahweh, Jehovah, Allah, Jesus, or Mohammed mentioned?

And I have to keep repeating myself, I have said the TC's are walking a fine line. There is no comparison between the Islamic song and the TC's which hold a historical and legal significance. YES THEY COME FROM JUDAO CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY but still have a strong secular purpose. If you substitute "God" from the TC's with Jehovah or Yahweh or even Allah it would have a different significance and would probably a hard case to argue as being constitutional.

sean_renaud said 3 months ago ...

So Outlander is it a mistake that your capitalizing God. If its generic it should be lower cased, not capitalised as you would do with a name.

outlander said 3 months ago ...

LOL..aaahaaaa! Sean you got me!

No it was more out of respect for God that I capitalize his name. The term "God" can mean virtually every major religion out there. The Ten Commandments are rooted in our culture.

grapekoolaid said 3 months ago ...

Allah is just Arabic for God. YHWH is the Hebrew equivalent of G-d. God doesn't put on a name tag that says "Allah" or "Yhwh", or "Iehova" or whatever. He's just called "God". In the TC, it says "God". If you translate it into their native tongues, it would say "Allah" in Arabic, "YHWH" in Hebrew, and so on.
