La Llorona

I am a person that believes in all kinds of things without having to have any proof. Im am full of blind faith, why? Fear mostly. My mother is Spanish, her mother a combination of Spanish and French, and Her dad 100% Spanish. They are very very Latino. I grew up with tons of stories that were meant to strike fear in my heart and keep me obedient. As I grew up I slowly realized most of these were variations of some folklore.

A very popular one that I heard frequently was the story of the Vieja Llorona. After a search I did for the original story I found it was originally called La Llorona. When my mother or grandmother decided it was a suitable time to scare the shit out of me, the story went like this:

"Sit down in that share Starsheeni"

"You are supose to be home before the street lights come on, do you know why? The Vieja Llorona!"

"A long time ago there was a woman with 4 children, she was madly in love with a man that disliked kids. She lost her sanity and took all of her children to that river just over there. It was late at night and she coldly drown each of her children 1 by one in the river. When she was done she couldn't believe what she had done, she was terribly sorry and felt she was unworthy of life. She walked into the river and drown herself. When she saw St. Peter at the Pearly Gates she was not allowed into heaven for her terrible sins of drowning her children and herself. She was told that they may let her into heaven if she could find her children and they sent her back to earth. Llarona wanders this area crying out for her children, on calm nights you can hear her weeping. You are not to be out after dark, if she sees you she may mistake you for her own and take you! If you hear her cry close, you are too late!"

My cousins and I would run to the window and strain our ears trying to hear her.

The moral of the story? Obey your parents, come home when told to, not because they will be angry, or beat you, or you will be punished but because the Llorona will take you under the water with her!

Im curious if I should pass these stories along to my son. I must admit it was pretty ingenius to ensure kids properly behaving without the parent having to be the bad guy. I think on a level us kids always knew it was bologna, but we wernt positive, it scared us enough to not want to risk it. No long term damage was done, and these stories fascinated me.

I was about to say it sounds like a "modern" day banshee but then right on your link that's right there at the bottom.

I dunno if the kids knew it was bolonga or not. Most kids at least for a while believe in a literal Santa Claus and there billions of adults who frankly believe in stuff a lot crazier than a ghost who feels bad for killing her kids. It's not like real women don't kill their real kids often enough that it only makes the news if she gets sufficiently creative or racks up a high enough score. The idea, especially when you tack on maybe she just went crazy and she's not a ghost but is still a very real person, that a ghost exists is frankly less crazy than believing various other religious beliefs.

Do you believe in Ghosts sean? and if you do, do you believe that they can hurt us?

sean_renaud said 4 months ago ...

Not really. I suspect that the majority of stories from back in the day are just that stories that people who didn't understand what was going on told themselves to explain what was going on. Still there are things that nobody properly understands and the only reason to rule out ghosts is the same reason to rule out psychic abilities of somesort. There are just more plausible things but I have no problem with them at least in theory. There are weird things mucking about. I mean even if you only count large things we can see with our eyes Gorillas were thought to be a myth until the 1930s. My only real reason I don't believe in Bigfoot is I figure with as many campers and hunters as are constantly in the areas where it's supposed to be it seemes unlikely that nobody has killed one yet either by running it over or shooting it. I know if I see Big Foot and I'm armed he's totally 100% fucked. I'll argue the conservationists that it's not an endangered species, you have to have an idea of how many animals there are before you can label it as such and there is a list. Whatever this thing is it ain't on the list cus you didn't know about it until right now. To everybody else I would like my money now.

You know what? I have a friend that believes with all his heart and every fiber of his being in big foot, he even offered to show him to me. Apparently there is some government owned land around, most government land around here is for hunting/fishing...there is rather giant area north west of me that is totally off limits to the public, a rather impressive gate around the perimeter, not your typical farmer holding in cows kind of gate, still barbed wire but excessively tall. A fairly common form of entertainment for country kids is to aimlessly drive around, sometimes to make a game out of it. Pick a light far off in the distance and see if you can drive to it meandering on back roads to get to the destination. Well he picked the light but couldnt get to it cause it was inside the gate. Pretty curious situation. He got out the spotlight he uses to hunt racoons and was trying to see something, anything in there, trying to figure out what the gate was for and why there were signs that read Governemnt Land No Trespassing. He finally spotted something fairly large about 100 yards away. He hopped out of his pickup and scaled the fence with the light and started towards it. There it was...big foot...Large Furry Man walked like some sort of monkey. Another time when he had his gf in the pickup he said they didnt even have to get out, he was in the same area but much closer to the fence, with the light you could see him clearly.

What do you make of that?

IT sounds like you know someone who needs to keep a gun with some power on him at all times.

LMAO....Mrs Bozo recently told me some filipino scary stories that her mum used to frighten her with whe she was young. The one used to get her home early was the aswang.

"Before modern medicine and science, aswangs served to explain miscarriages and other maladies. Today, aside from entertainment value, Filipino mothers often tell their children aswang stories to keep them off the streets and keep them home at night."

My parents however did not bother with mystical creatures to get me home early. They simply used threats of arse stinging violence to ensure my compliance.

As for your friends story....has he not heard of a camera lol. Also if it was me I'd be pestering him to take me and show me. I have a gut feeling I'd end up very disappointed.

I don't think it's wrong to tell fairy tales, cause that's what they are. I felt that telling kids about magical or fictious characters only gave them a reason to doubt the real horrors you told them about. I think talking things out and setting boundries is mentally healthier.

My mom would tell us about "boogie men" getting us if we stayed out late. I remember think what a ding bat she was for thinking we'd believe it.

I think that the most things to fear are right out there in the light, but we do not see them. There aren't any fairy tales that scare me more than what is right in front of me when I am too secure (blind) to see.

My mom used to tell us that the "boogie man" would get us, but it was usually the real man that did.

Thank you woman, but none of those things you experienced apply to my brother and his wife. Its their first kid, they acted like this since his birth, like I said-they are pretty uppity. By that I mean superior snobs that I love dearly. This has been read the rest
