Atheism in America

Yes. These are the people attacking religion in America.

These are the monsters that are laying siege to your faith.

Actually, they're in the closet afraid to come out.

It's from Financial Times, so you won't be able to say "look at where it's from! Your sources are clearly biased"

Wow that was a really long article, but I almost read all of it and it was very interesting. I just dont understand how people can be so intolerant of others. I really just dont get it.

The most interesting quote.

A Gallup poll last year showed that, while 9 per cent of Americans would not vote for a Jewish presidential candidate, 22 per cent wouldn’t support a Mormon and 32 per cent would not vote for a gay or lesbian candidate, 49 per cent would refuse to back an atheist for president."

sean_renaud said 4 months ago ...

That was a long read that basically boils down to atheists get discriminated against and there are probably a good deal more of us out there than are registered because a lot of people just want to be in the club and thus claim to be christian or at least don't object to the label.

grapekoolaid said 4 months ago ...

Here are some statistics about atheists. It reads, "If all the atheists left the USA, it would lose 93% of the National Academy of the Sciences but less than 1% of the prison population.

It's just some guy's tweet, so I can't verify that statistic, but amusing nonetheless.

starchini said 4 months ago ...

I think its important to clarify that atheists are not evil and don't worship satan for the prison statistic...lots of people think that if you dont have worship God, you worship the Devil. Keeping that in mind, idk...1% is pretty low I think for any group of people.

sean_renaud said 4 months ago ...

I don't particularly trust those numbers. I suspect that in prison just like in the military you're gently reminded to go to church regardless of what you actually think or believe and there are a lot of undercover atheists. On the other end of things I'm sure that in academia there is an opposite pressure to not believe in the Space Bully and they're are probably tons of religious (at least enough to believe in souls, believe in an afterlife of some sort etc etc) that claim not to so they won't catch any flack for it.

Atheism is the driving force behind much of liberalism....gay marriage for instance is a huge front for atheism.....once gay marriage is the law of the land it's Katie bar the door....there will be lawsuits a plenty against churches for not marrying same sex couples....all in the name of destroying the church.

grapekoolaid said 3 months ago ...

d6: You didn't even read the article, did you? Because if you had, you wouldn't be spouting this garbage. Way to be a part of the problem and nowhere near the solution.

Atheists want to destroy the church? HA! We atheists don't give a flying fuck about the church. We want them to leave us alone & stay out of government like they're supposed to.

And start paying taxes. But that's just me.

d6fer said 3 months ago ...

it's the truth.

grapekoolaid said 3 months ago ...

No. It's not. Just because you say it doesn't make it so. If anything, it's the atheists who are persecuted and marginalized in society. Way to blame the victim. Stay classy.

reckoner said 3 months ago ...

"Atheism is the driving force behind much of liberalism"

I'd rather live in a country with equal rights for women than in a country that followed the bible and said that women aren't allowed to teach men. I could go on, but I think you get the point.

sean_renaud said 3 months ago ...

Society is the driving force for liberalism. Show me a single country in the history of the planet that has survived Conservatism in the long term. You can't because that's not how reality works. It's not like it something recent. You can make the debate that not all change is good but standing still is always fatal in the long run.

reckoner said 3 months ago ...

Yup, and its always religion and conservatives fighting progress

reckoner said 3 months ago ...

Here is one of the famous arguments used against allowing women to vote in America.

"That is the old story-of woman-Eve she got it and we’ve had trouble ever since"

reckoner said 3 months ago ...

Here are four of the arguments they used:

1) First, judges claimed that marriage belonged under the control of the states rather than the federal government.

2) Second, they began to define and label all interracial relationships (even longstanding, deeply committed ones) as illicit sex rather than marriage.

3) Third, they insisted that interracial marriage was contrary to God's will, and

4) Fourth, they declared, over and over again, that interracial marriage was somehow "unnatural."

On this fourth point--the supposed "unnaturality" of interracial marriage--judges formed a virtual chorus. Here, for example, is the declaration that the Supreme Court of Virginia used to invalidate a marriage between a black man and a white woman in 1878:

The purity of public morals," the court declared, "the moral and physical development of both races….require that they should be kept distinct and separate… that connections and alliances so unnatural that God and nature seem to forbid them, should be prohibited by positive law, and be subject to no evasion.

Adam and Eve were never married. Nobody married them. King Solomon had 700 wives. Tell me where in your holy book does it say one man and one woman? If you think they're icky, just come out and say it. It's okay for you to think they're icky. read the rest
