People often ask why I am anti religion. I hope this helps explain it

I hope this explains it.

First, let me tell you a bit about me. I'm in my 30s and I have a rare eye disease that causes significant problems with my vision. There is a very real chance I will have major vision loss when I'm older, and at a much earlier age than is typical.

Recent I read some great news, some Doctors have found a very promising treatment that uses stem cells to regenerate cells in the eyes of people with macular degeneration. This is great news for someone like me!

So what does religion have to do with this?

"Embryonic stem cells, as their name suggests, are derived from human embryos. In order to harvest embryonic stem cells, an embryo must be destroyed. Central to the debate, then, is our view of the human embryo. The biblical teaching is that human existence begins at conception (Psalm 139:13-16; Jeremiah 1:4-5). The international consensus of embryologists agrees with Scripture in that life begins at fertilization. At the moment of conception, the embryo is 100 percent human, with all 46 human chromosomes and a fully functioning, unique genetic code. Size and location do not determine humanity.

Because research on embryonic stem cells requires the destruction of a living human being, it is against God’s will. No amount of promised “benefit” to society or to medical knowledge can justify the killing of a human for spare parts. The end does not justify the means. It is never ethical—in fact, it is morally reprehensible—to mark people for death in order to conduct utilitarian experiments on their body parts."

So this Christian, and many like them, are fighting to deny me hope for my disease. Why? Because an old book says something that they think means that fertilized eggs are 100% morally equivalent to a living breathing human.

And there you see my problem with Religion. You see how it directly affects my life in a very negative way. And I'll leave you with a simple question. Should we codify into our laws this person's religious beliefs, and deny people with diseases like me the potential of a cure?

Let's also checkout those verses from the bible

Jeremiah 1:4-5

4 The word of the LORD came to me, saying, 5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew[a] you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

Psalm 139:13-16

13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.

I guess God knows what he is doing in all things, and if it is meant that you are gifted with this treatment, then it is meant to be. If not, then there is a reason for that, too. I would go with the passage, "there is none so blind as those that will not see." You don't need wordly eyes for that--look with your own eyes without physical sight.

I think you dodged my questions. Should we codify into our laws this person's religions beliefs?

feather said 4 months ago ...

What are your beliefs reckoner? When does a fertilized egg become human?

wombat said 4 months ago ...

Laws vs. religious beliefs.....the age old question. I am sorry. I do not know. If I did, I would be someone important here. But why waste the opportunity to improve your ability to advance when it was a God-given right to advance through HIS knowledge in the first place?

Best of luck thinking this one out, because I am running aground, too. But I wish I wasn't. This has made my head spin. Wish I could say just the right thing, but as I have said, we don't know what that is from here.

I'm one of the odd-ball christians who supports stem-cell research and treatment. So much good can come from it, IMHO. Dont like it? Dont get the treatment ...

I can only hope I am in the peanut gallery when you are trying to explain your
lack of belief, and why, to God. We all have ailments, thanks to Adam. Thanks
to him and Eve, sin came into the world along with all sorts of disease and
corruption. Would you believe in God if they suddenly reversed their decision
and freely used embryonic stem cells? The bottom line is, we should not be
messing with the unborn no matter when they become a human. If you blow
up a building, how far along does it have to be before it is a crime? If it is
going to take nine months to build a building and you blow it up after a
month are you going to be arrested? Is human life no better than that? Does
a developing human being have less rights than a building made of wood,
bricks, and steel? The question is not: when does life begin? The question is:
what right do we have to end that life at any point. I think it is very simple.
Abortions should not be outlawed, but it should be against the law to
perform one. Then it would be like suicide. It would be up to the individual
to deal with it. It would be their sin and their sin alone. The problem started
when we allowed "doctors" to perform abortions. Why did we continually
stop Kavorkian from assisting people in suicide ... because it was murder.
Abortion is murder as well. Sorry about your eyes, but I do not want you
killing me and taking my eyes or stem cells either.

i dont think there something wrong with religion. for me it is just a way of expressing in what you believe in but it doesnt mean that you have to totally belive in it. for me faith is your personal relationship with God. religion is just a way of expressing your faith. if you dont agree with religion then dont. but the way, people misinterpret the bible too much. sometimes what they know in the past seems wrong for them because they dont fully understand it. after all science is more clearer nowadays. if the people in the past learned about stem cells, i doubt it if they would write that. thats why i dont lke it when people bashes some religion or is against it too much. remember that the people who wrote the bible didnt have the knowldge we have now... just saying... by the way i hope youre gonna be okay soon...

Are the IUD and in vitro fertilization murder? They both cause fertilized eggs to not survive!

outlander said 4 months ago ...

This is a slippery slope and you fail to mention the disastrous consequences nearly all embrionic stem cell testing has brought forth. Nearly all cases the tissue is either rejected or tumors occur. Your link is fairly new, wait and year and see what happens. Adult stem cell research has brought far better and more fruitful outcomes without having to destroy life.

I have no idea what this has to do with religion. Embryos are prehuman so is destroying them destroying human life? That is not a religous belief it is a fact. If we kill a pregnant woman with an embryo inside her or if we burn down a lab with embryos in the freezer it is still a termination of human life. No human life is worth another. If I am wrong then great! I can show you where you can find a whole slew of stems cells, organs, and tissue, just visit these places they call death row.

outlander said 4 months ago ...

I don't understand the connection here. IUD is birth control and in vitro is fetilization outside then placed back inside with the hopes it will grow. An embryo is the 8 weeks before the fetus. Your own post agrees with the fact that when an embryo is formed it is a separate human life. We are either teminating human life or we aren't there is no middle ground here.

reckoner said 4 months ago ...

the IUD prevents fertilized eggs from implanting. If you believe a fertilized egg is the moral equivalent of a 2 year old, then the IUD is murder. Do you believe the IUD is murder? In Vitro fertilized more eggs than they implant, then they discard the unused ones. Is this murder? Would you ban both of these?

feather said 4 months ago ...

At what point reckoner would you say it is immoral to terminate a healthy embryo or fetus? I'm guessing that a zygote is just off the table here, but at five weeks the heart, brain, spinal cord and other organs are beginning to form, so I'm just wondering if you have any cut off? Don't get me wrong, I know there are times when having an abortion is the only option, tubal pregnancy for instance, but I'm not all for abortion as birth control either.
