Believing is Work

One of my favorite books when I was young was Alice in Wonderland. Imagine how dismayed I was to learn in college that I was reading the work of a Victorian Michael Jackson, if you will. But if we threw out every writer with a dubious social life, our libraries would be small indeed. I later read Through the Looking Glass and one of the best conversations every written. It takes place between Alice and the White Queen.....Alice says something like "It's no use, I just can't believe it." The White Queen responds with, "I dare say you haven't tried hard enough. Why when I was your age I believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast." In my younger days I think I could have bested the White Queen, but now that I'm out of practice I probably couldn't manage more than two or three......pity really.

That's interesting because that fabulous line is said by Alice in the latest movie. either way, it's my ultimate favourite book now (and i'm not so young!).

Yep. Lewis Carroll and Hans Christian Anderson were both Jerry Sandusky types. Does that really take anything away from the quality of their work product? Do you like Michael Jackson's music any less because he lived in Neverland Ranch? It's a tough call.

There's considerable amount of faith involved in this too, no?

Phoeby, why do they always mess with literature? I yet to see an acurate Dracula movie. Anyway, if it leads you to read the original....... Grape, I have to admit PYT gives me the willies now.

i think it infuses 'something' else into their work, grape. or at least takes away what might have been just delicious innocence or something (had you not known).

maybe it's best not to know...

Feather. it did. and i love it. and i agree about pyt. euuuu.

feather: Hm... Yes. PYT is a bit... Tainted? Tarnished? Can't find the right word for it, but you are right to a certain degree.

phoebes: I see what you mean, too. I believe the phrase, "ignorance is bliss" is aptly appropriate in this case. Supposedly Hans Christian Anderson really liked kids and died a (ahem) virgin (just like Sir Isaac Newton).
