I'm an addicted, and it's taken me a while to figure out a decent strategy. The key is to get as many multipliers as you can, as fast as you can. I've heard that the way to get the multipliers is to eliminate 12 gems with one swap. This seems true, but I'm pretty sure I've gotten the multiplier when I've eliminated fewer gems at the top of the board.
Getting multipliers fast is the key. One good strategy I've found for doing this is to try make moves at the bottom of the board as much as possible because you have a greater chance of getting multiple matches with one swap. Another trick is to try not to blow up the power gems directly, but get them with a cascaded by matching regular gems around them. This will usually get you a multiplier.
So keep an eye out for matches of more than three so you can get the power gems, which will then help you get multipliers.
