I've seen a similar video before that got quite a bit of attention. Apparently its a trendy form of discipline, yet controversial. Some people think its extreme and abusive. Others think its brilliant and effective. What do you think?
Of course its effectiveness would depend on the disposition of the kid involved and what he/she might already be used to. I certainly dont understand or see how this is extreme or abusive. Holding a sign saying what you did wrong and letting the public know. How is that any different than the local newspaper printing your name and alleged crime for the public to read in the court section? I always read that section just to see if I know anyone who may have gotten into trouble. What I think is fucked up about the court news is them printing charges without the outcome. Like when I was charged with excessive acceleration, I went to court for it (cause it wasn't true!) just being charged with it was listed, and not neutrally. It read "Starchini was charged with accesive acceleration on Friday Night, she was pulled over in the 200 block by Officer Fuchead."...It doesnt say that I plead not guilty and will be going to fight this bogus charge on Monday! It gives the sense that im guilty. In most ways I find that more abusive than holding a sign when the guilt has been proven!
Of course in the next week paper it says that Starchini was not guilty of excessive acceleration...its too late tho, people only skim the not guilty side, people really absorb the charges though...
Point though, I can't fathom how this would be abuse. Its simply taking ownership of your actions. I can see how it would be effective. I do think its rather pathetic to feel like that was your only option...When your child cares more about the publics opinion than that of his parents, thats sad. The fact that the only motivator for him to fly straight is embarrissment instead of the fuzzy feeling from doing good and comfort of not hurting others...In that way I dont think this sign discipline sends the right message. It says it matters what other people think of you, and that you should do the right things cause its embarrissing not to, not because its right to do the right thing.
At the age these sign holding kids are, I would think reasoning with them and showing them the error of their way and why ought to be sufficient, I supose a kid that just doesnt care about right and wrong needs other motivation, like priviledges, groundings, spanking (ha, ha), chores, I supose sign holding too...Whatever works. Atleast the woman is doing something! So I applaud her efforts, its just unfortunate it boiled down to this being the best option.
On the bright side people from the streets arn't throwing rotting fruit at them! That would make it considerably worse and then I would prolly classify it as abuse.

Now you understand fox news ;)
