if you are asked if A is immoral or moral, how do you decide?
Here are some examples:
Is it immoral to have a figurine of Buddha in your house?
Is it immoral to use contraception?
Is it immoral to be gay?
Is it immoral to have a tattoo?

While I'll fully admit that I work on for a lack of better terms a growing circle of me, ergo something is increasingly good or bad by how it effects me, and while I ultimately value long game over short game. The general rule is that good things create or preserve, bad thingds destroy. Nothing you've suggested is destructive in the least (well the tattoo might be bad for your career, good luck getting into office with that tribal on your face) so they are basically inherently neutral.
As cheesy as it sounds my heart tells me. When faced with a decision or choice, I either get nauseas and feel sick or I feel happy about it. Whatever decision doesnt turn my stomache to concrete or make my heart hurt is the right decision.
and no non of those things I consider immoral.
starchini: your guts is one of the best barometer when it comes to morality. its what makes us different from other animals or perhaps more like them. our instincts tells us if it is good or not... :-)
Not sure if I agree there. Guts are great when you don't have time to think about it but if you do have time to think about it there should be parameters that go above and beyond what you think initially.
I don't mean initially, as I think things over my feelings change, its always important to think of all possible outcomes consequences implications...a feeling for every category, if any of those feelings are negative you gotta weigh them out and decides whats me most important. Say finding a fifty dollar bill and no one is around, I feel great about this...finding a fifty with a delinquent water bill attached to it....I don't feel so great about keeping it, is take it to the water place and pay the bill...but the feelings are the answers to the logic. Based on the kind of person you are and how deeply you feel are to blame for out logical actions.
Morality is the determining the difference between what is good and what is bad based on actions, intentions, and choices we make. What makes this a great topic is defining what is bad and what is good. Sometimes the line is blurred between the two and what is good and bad may be vastly different.
I think there are universal moral norms that dictate certain things are almost always 100% bad. Murder, rape, pedephilia, lies, torture, and stealing are examples.
We decide what is immoral by our cultural norms and our upbringing so the question what is immoral on a specific basis is difficult because we have all been raised differently. Someone from the west may think shooting a dear is disgustingly immoral while someone living in the deep south would think gay male sex is immoral.
no to all... and yeah i was raised catholic and still is... being moral depends on the person and not by the book or what religion says.... for me religion is just a way to connect yourself to the higher power. after all, faith is you personal relationship to God.
