I know someone who worked at a turkey farm, and someone who works at a chicken processing plant.
I think I know why I am recently getting sick at the smell of cooking meat.
Not to say that I didn't eat a sausage sandwich today, because I did.
Wombie I have a friend who works at a hog plant. He told me his job was "just taking care of the baby piggies and the mommas, feeding them, bathing them, making sure they have fresh hay and keep tabs on the thermostat, make sure they are nice and warm, count them weigh them and stuff." I said "omg I want that job! Thats sounds great.",
he said, "Well the and stuff isn't so great. You see they need counted everyday to know how many died, the babies need weighed because if they arnt at a certain weight so many weeks after the mother gave birth, then...we have to kill them, hold'em by their back legs and (made swooping motion as though whipping the pig around in a half circle and smashing his head into the concrete)."....
Im sure my mouth was open and my face horrified. "Omg thats terrible, how many do you kill a day?", "well that depends on how well they are eating, and how well I coerce them into eating more...I take some you know, when I can, I dont like doing it, I feel awefull about it, so when I know a piggy isnt gonna make the cut and my supervisors are no where in sight, I put them in my coat pockets (opens his coat to show me all the pockets, must be 10 of em) and over lunch I put them in my pickup and find homes for them later."
Isn't that aweful!? I asked why he would get in trouble if he took the piggies that you knew were gonna have their heads bashed in. He said he wasn't sure but prolly competition. This policy ensures they have the fattest biggest hogs for butchering and eating, but those other piggies are gonna be big too if they get sold or worse given away then the pigs will compete and thats no good...so instead they must die...
Most of the meat market is so fucked up...
My coworker told me mother cows beller for their calfs for months, the dairy cows...thats the only reason they make milk. They get preggers and they take the baby from her just as soon as its born and they pump all the milk from her and shoot her up with hormones so the milk keeps getting made...but what broke my heart was that they cry for their babies long after they are taken...I read this elsewhere and new my coworker had dairy cows of his own and asked him. He went into greater detail than even the article. Its real sad...
All that is so sad and awful! I didn't know about the cows. We're a cruel and disgusting lot, aren't we? Thanks for the information, though. I may think about becoming a vegetarian after all this.
I was a vegetarian once wombie. Did you know that humans arnt even supose to digest milk from a cow? The people that are lactose intolerant are the normal ones! haha. Its very difficult to lead a vegetarian lifestyle, I mean, talk about high maintenance and self deprivation. It takes a lot of passion and will power. I too would like to go back to it. The trouble with me was I dont have an issue at all with killing and eating animals, its the torture that breaks my heart. So im fine with eating free range meat from the super market or meat that my husband has killed and processed. Its just the big company meat. When I first was a vegetarian I tried almost too hard to ax out everything, I only made it just over a year without eating any meat at all, but I always kept dairy in my diet, not sure why that was kinda hypocritical, I switched to soy milk for my cereal but continued to eat cheese and eggs and seafood.
Im gonna do it again, only this time actually only be rid of the meat that is tortured. Like Tyson, no Tyson meat. No meat from any fast food restaurant or really any restaurant in general. Pretty much unless it is hunted or has free range stamped on it I wont eat it. That includes eggs, only free range eggs from free range chickens. Start up with soy milk, I love the almond kind. I would still eat seafood. I dont have a problem with fish being tortured : P . Im sorta on the fence about cheese....I LOVE cheese. Love love love cheese and I know from experience its very difficult for me to get soy cheese where im at and if it is available its rediculously expensive and doesnt taste near as good...ill try it. YAY no more tortured meat for me! : )
Reckoner, you should keep posting these videos to keep my drive on high : )
"The people that are lactose intolerant are the normal ones!"
Most people are lactose intolerant to some degree.
"So im fine with eating free range meat from the super market or meat that my husband has killed and processed. "
I feel this way too, but I don't trust the labels on the things at the supermarket. So I'm a vegetarian cause it's the only way I know to be sure.
God that is so fucked up, I wonder how those workers do it...surely they cant all be evil, prolly just regular people trying to earn a living...I couldn't imagine being so desperate for work that I would do such horrible things inflicting excruciating pain on such tiny defenseless little animals. Maybe those workers are evil heartless bastards. Makes my heart hurt...Could you imagine how confused and terrified they are? Prolly in shock from the pain of tripping over your insides. Injured and wandering around stepping on eggshells pecking at the decapitated lower half of its cousin. One of my besties had a chic and a duck as pets, we used to take them for walks, they'd sit on our laps while we watched a movie, gave them baths in the tub, filled kiddy pools for them in the winter, have them play with ping pong balls. Peetri and Sara were their names. Peetri got really big, he was a mallard duck they released him out in the wild. His wings were clipped when she bought him but they grew back, cause he could fly fine. Sara was killed by a hungry farm cat...
