I believe the fastest way that we can fix our economy, and dare I say "fix the world", is to reduce our dependance on foreign oil. America's addiction to this stuff drives the price and fuels the engines of terrorism!

The solution is simple, and for some of you it is right outside your door.

We have an abundance of natural gas here in the U.S. And the infrastructure is already in place and growing.

Many already use it to heat our homes and cook with, and now there are vehicles being produced that can use natural gas for fuel.

Here is a map of current refueling stations for CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) There are also links on the site to learn more about it.

The direct transference of dollars from OPEC oil to American natural gas will do a few things:

  1. Create Jobs and reduce the unemployment rate

  2. Reduce the price of oil by decreasing the demand

  3. Significantly reduce the amount of money flowing into the hands of terrorist organizations funded by the overly wealthy OPEC nations.

  4. Reduce energy costs for consumers and business alike, which will in turn create more jobs in other sectors.

Many cars that have "flex fuel" technology can easily be retrofit to run CNG and there are a few production models available already. The Honda Civic GX, and the MV-1 which is an American made vehicle specifically built for handicapped individuals.

I plan to buy a new (or new to me) car within the next 3 to 5 years. I am sure by then there will be refueling stations in my area for CNG.

I hope Ford builds a production CNG fueled vehicle by then....I would prefer to buy from them, but honestly buying an American built Honda makes me feel a lot more warm and fuzzy than buying a Chinese built ipad!

This was the first link I found talking about this. I don't know much about it, just wanted to share.

I got no problem with putting a large portion of our country and the world on CNG. I don't really want to put cars on it unless we have no other choice cus I think we'd burn through it rather quickly and we're already so close to getting something truly new that I see no reason for a lateral.

That said curing the world while ignoring the Middle East is a foolish quest. They are people. They are in the world. The vast majority of them are sane. We're going to need to deal with them sooner or later and I don't think starving them to death is a viable option seeing how despite OPEC we/and OPEC are doing that now. (it's worth noting that while the media doesn't cover it Islamic Terrorists do mostly attack other arabs.)

No no no no no no... The point is to exhaust the supplies of fuel all over the world until we're the only ones that have any resources whatsoever. Think of the value a gallon of gas will bring when the rest of the world is in Mad Max mode!

To quote Lord Humungus, "There has been too much violence. Too much pain. But I have an honorable compromise. Just walk away. Give me your pump, the oil, the gasoline, and the whole compound, and I'll spare your lives. Just walk away and we'll give you a safe passageway in the wastelands. Just walk away and there will be an end to the horror. "

Reck....that is an investment site.

sean....even if we drastically reduce our use of oil, we can not get off of it for a very long time....so many other products are made from oil.

Grape....I kind of agree with you that is what is going on....I think if oil companies really wanted to drill here, they would be....considering how our politicians are bought and paid for.

sean_renaud said 5 months ago ...

I didn't actually say anything about getting off oil.

I said I'm not really sold that we should be working on transfering the fleet to CNG instead of just soldiering forward to electric and better hybrids. I'm sure there is SOMETHING else we can run on CNG that will be worth while. Powerplants, buses (which in CA already mostly use CNG)

The majority of the oil we use we use in fuel. We can MAKE oil as it stands and while it's more expensive now to make it than it is to drill for it I suspect that if we could drastically cut down on the oil that we're using for cars I bet it wouldn't be too expensive just to make oil for the rest of the stuff that we need.

Well that is one of the other benefits to CNG....the vehicle uses far less oil because it holds up much longer....todays synthetics are getting 5 to 10k between oil changes using gasoline, with CNG we could be looking at 20k oil changes.

I believe the market is going to make this happen....look at the Clean Energy site I provided the link for...look at the map...it's growing....and as it does, the price of oil will drop to the point of being as cheap as Natural gas if not cheaper....if the oil companies don't have a vested interest in Natural Gas, they will try to kill it in it's tracks.....they will lobby for road blocks in Congress, and if they can't stop it that way, they will get the price of gas down cheap enough to make people forget all about any other forms of fuel for awhile......if they do have a vested interest, watch for the price to stabilize and the price of CNG to increase as the demand increases....there is a lot of money to be made in energy.

I'm more interested in using it combined with renewables to replace coal power plants.

d6fer said 5 months ago ...

That's good too....as long as it keeps the money here, I'm fine with that.
