I've found the problem that's causing the slowness, and I've made a temporary fix. But the numbers next to 'Conversations' and 'Followed Users' won't be updating until I get a real fix. You can still click them to see the most recent conversations and posts from users you follow, it just won't tell you with a red number that there's new stuff.
I've been updating it manually :) Just don't depend on the red numbers for the next week or so. I'm hoping to fix this and get private posts up over the holidays. I'm taking vacation which should give me some time to work on yakkstr :)
I think I still have red numbers. Feels like they've been up recently. Is there a laymans reason why that's effecting things? I don't know HOW I would fix the red numbers or how I would recordinate them but as they are now I'm not a HUGE fan (for the prementioned reasons I haven't said anything) but basically a red 10 doesn't QUITE mean anything because it could mean someone (say D6fer or StopMediaBias) came down the line and commented on every current discussion and that was ten, OR it could mean that D6fer and Reckoner happened to be on at the same time and each posted 5 times in one post over the course of an hour.
Aside from any technical reasons, I don't pretend to be a programer. Maybe change it to unanswered posts which I think is more accurately what people care about. How many conversations have moved on since the last time they chimed in rather than how many times people chimed int period.
There isn't a good laymans explanation. There is no reason that the red numbers should make it slow, it's some malfunctioning code that is the problem. I just need to replace it when I get a chance.
The red numbers do mean something, just not what you want it to mean ;) Your suggestion is easy to do as well, and I don't feel particularly strongly about either way of doing it.
Anyone else have opinions on it?
I'm just glad you're still here, and you've done a fantastic job. It's also just nice to know you stay around to keep an eye on things and fix problems, so thanks!
No suggestions, really. I do have to remember in my head to go look at the user list to see if folks I'm familiar with have posted recently if they are not on the one main page, but it's no big deal. Can't expect everything, when all else is so smooth. So, High Five!
