Community Guidelines

I've been a part of many community sites over the years and one thing is clear, nearly all of them have degenerated into non stop personal attacks as they grow larger. One of my main goals is to not all that to happen to this site. This will be a walled garden, and I know that walled gardens are not for everyone. If you are one of those people then the other 99% of community sites on the internet may be a better home for you.

These are the initial rules, and are likely to change over time.

  • No spam
  • No X rated content
  • No personal attacks/insults

All of these are fuzzy grey lines, and we'll figure out exactly where we want to draw them as time goes by an unclear cases are resolved. For now I am going to be strict with these rules because I believe it's easier to loosen the rules later than it is to tighten them once things have gotten out of hand.

All moderators should judge reported content according to these guidelines and we can openly discuss any cases that aren't clear.

yakkstr would you please clarify what you mean by 'x rated content'? Any discussion of a sexual matter? Porn pics? Stories?

Not trying to be a smart alex. Just want to understand better so I don't step over the line.

I like to avoid unpleasant confrontations as well, which I seem to attract given my unwavering dedication to truth, justice, and the American way. I avoided most of that by blocking windbags on "the other site".

Offering a way to block other users with which you hopelessly disagree would go a long way toward cutting down on personal attacks, etc.

Ex-President Bush will really enjoy the no personal attacks part of that. But with elections coming up in November, how is it we are to express an opinion about far right winged conservatives ?

Can we still call a known rapist a piece of excrement ? Or is that too personal ?

Can we tell PETA in commentary to _iss off ?

Can we tell a young adult to act their age and grow up ? Too personal ?

Insults ? Telling someone who built a bridge to no-where that they are either a shyster, a politician or a Republican ? Or, should we just say thank you for your futuristic view in knowing a bridge will be needed there in the next millennium ?

Come on guys, I've had comments disappearing here faster than condoms at a nun's convention being held on 43rd street! Haven't attacked anyone personally (unless telling someone to be more respectful towards their parents or that they might act their age for a change is too personal and perhaps insulting ?)

Should we all be issued Bibles as pass cards to enter ?

New site, with same ole same ole. Isn't that like taking a shower and putting dirty thread's back on ?

Please explain "X-Rated"... adult like cuss words ? Mentioning adults in sexual situations with one another ?

* No spam
* No X rated content
* No personal attacks/insults

That all sounds good and, I can agree with it. But it shouldn't it have guidelines as to what is and what isn't appropriate commentary rather than what one moderator finds offensive while another may find humor with the exact comment ?

At least this site will be Fritt free (insulting towards Fritt ?), and, maybe wild and rude dogs won't intercept a lonely young lovely on her walk home ?

Just asking and just saying.....

Your guidelines sound reasonable and necessary. I, for one, would rather error on the strict side for now. Our last site became such a sad neighborhood that I'd like to see this stay nice.

sweetsoul said almost 2 years ago ...

It's my philosophy that if someone pays in time and money to host a web site, they have the right to set the rules as they see fit. Users have the right to decide if they wish to abide by the rules or not. If not, they can find another web site with rules they can agree with, or start their own web site.

woman said almost 2 years ago ...

And when they seem questionable, they very well may be. I'm not for censorship but I have NO desire to have this pristine new place end up the garbage pit most of us came from.

yakkstr said almost 2 years ago ...

@sweetsoul Right now my gut says that if it's ok in an R rated movie then it's ok here. Here are some examples of the things that aren't allowed. Posting or linking to nude pictures, explaining sexual acts in detail in prose, etc.

@alien letting users block others users from their posts is on my short list of things todo in the near future

@hottips4u Thanks for helping me clarify. Public figures like a President or a celebrity are a bit different. What I meant was personal attacks against other people on this site or using this site. I'm not sure exactly what the guideline should be for public figures or other such things.

I addressed your comment which I removed in your post.

sarojaede said almost 2 years ago ...

If we can block other users from our posts, does that mean we also block their ability to read our posts our just to comment on them? I can say from past experience at other sites, that there have been those who I blocked from commenting who would then copy and paste my posts into their own posts so they could comment on them. But I guess that could be taken care of here by reporting such a post to a moderator and hopefully getting it removed.

yakkstr said almost 2 years ago ...

@hottips4u

You said, "Come on guys, I've had comments disappearing here faster than condoms at a nun's convention being held on 43rd street!"

I just spent my time investigating this (I want to make sure things are fair) but you've only had one comment removed. Please don't exaggerate when making your point if you want me to take them seriously.

yakkstr said almost 2 years ago ...

@sarojaede

I don't know of a good way to stop them from seeing it. They could log out and view the site as if they weren't a member. Ip addresses change too much to use for something like this ...

sarojaede said almost 2 years ago ...

Okay, so basically in a situation like that where someone who has been blocked from commenting copies another user's post into their own, would that be something appropriate to report and delete as a moderator?

yakkstr said almost 2 years ago ...

If they are using it to mock or insult the original poster then absolutely it should be removed.

expendable said almost 2 years ago ...

Just a suggestion, but if you or a moderator you appoint has to delete a comment, perhaps you can edit the comment to hide it, replacing it with "This comment has been removed for violations of the community guidelines." This way the comment can still be viewed by you and the moderators, but nobody else can see it.

Or if you're going to lock a thread, post a comment that the thread was locked and when (and why) it was locked.

Should cut down on confusion.

hottips4u said almost 2 years ago ...

I was being sarcastic about comments disappearing faster than...well you know what I'm saying.

But there in remains a potential problem for users and not just me specifically. You took my comment as me being deceitful when I was being sarcastic, albeit ambiguously so, I see it now that you've taken my comment out of context due to that ambiguity. But that (being deceitful) wasn't my intent. Actually, some might take that (hinting someone is a liar, mildly, but still) as an insult. Interpretation of commentary, or, personal opinion interjecting itself unconsciously upon others ?

Here in America, x-rated movies show nudity, use graphic adult conversations and even more-so, adult innuendo.

Not trying to be a hard case about this, but how high are you constructing the walls of this garden ?

Are those walls to keep a certain populace safe from contradiction by outsiders who may have a different opinion ?

And, is implying someone is dumb or stupid in what they might have posted about themselves or something they have done or said really that offensive ?

I guess to be safe, one might keep to one's own post least they risk offending another via commentary posted publicly internationally. What is or at least appears dumb or stupid in one culture isn't so dumb or stupid in another and therein is the danger of offending another with no previous intent to do so other than say...gee...that was dumb or better yet, plain outright stupit, imo, (opinions are not allowed if contrary to the original posters intent to simply express themselves that reveal their own stupidities to a world reading what is written ?

Or, will it be like the N word, were friends say it to one another everyday in song or community, but if an outsider says the N word it's always taken offensively whether it was said in that fashion or not ?

Just questions you folks will be confronted with and a multitude more "as they occur" and comments are removed.

Like I said, nice site, but gray zones galore presently. Perhaps I'll just step back and watch for awhile until I can comprehend what is expected of me as a member... in a more informed manner. Otherwise myself and other unaware users might well find ourselves on the otherside of that walled garden and having no idea of the hows or whys of it.

The most appropriate sign at the entrance might should be....CAUTION, ambiguous crossings.

Have a nice night.

sounds fair to me...I also think that if a moderator is involved directly that the comment should be flagged and the decision be made by another moderator just to be fair.

I do like expendables idea also....there needs to be a trash can of sorts that all deleted comments can be reviewed.

Also a private messaging function would be handy.
